Frequently Asked Questions

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment method that allows you to convert your existing skills, hands-on experience, and practical knowledge into a Nationally Recognised Qualification. It values the learning you have gained through real work experience, informal training, and previous study completed within Australia.

Through this process, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) carefully reviews the evidence you provide to determine whether your competencies meet the standards required for your chosen qualification.

RPL is often one of the quickest and most cost-effective ways to gain formal credentials. It can also help strengthen your case when applying for job promotions, trade licences, or industry-specific tickets.

How does RPL differ from formal studies?

RPL caters to individuals with industry experience seeking a qualification based on their expertise, while formal studies are for those new to the field, learning from scratch. For instance, a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) years through formal studies but could be completed in days or weeks via RPL, depending on your evidence.**

Does a RPL Qualification recognised nationwide in Australia?

Yes, upon successful completion, a RPL qualification issued by a RTO is nationally recognised across Australia.

How can I obtain a qualification through RPL?

Contact us, we will guide you through a four-step process: Free Skills Check – RPL Pre-Assessment, Put Together Your Experience Portfolio, Assessment by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), and Receive Your Official Qualification.

What are the benefits of RPL?

RPL acknowledges industry experience, eases entry into higher education, and speeds up qualifications by validating existing skills.

What are the costs associated with an RPL assessment?

Costs vary based on an individual’s status.

Who Can Apply for RPL in Australia?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is intended for individuals who have genuine, hands-on local Australian work experience, along with practical skills or industry-specific knowledge directly related to the qualification they wish to attain.

To be eligible, applicants must be able to present clear, detailed, and verifiable evidence of their professional experience and competencies within their field.

Please note: In most cases, applicants are expected to have completed a minimum of three years of relevant industry experience within Australia to be considered for the RPL process.

Is RPL Guaranteed for Every Applicant?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is not automatically granted to all individuals. The outcome is determined by the strength, relevance, and completeness of the evidence you submit in support of your application.

Each case is independently assessed by the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and its appointed assessor, in accordance with national standards and qualification requirements. If your evidence does not fully meet the required competencies, the RTO may decline to proceed with RPL. In such instances, you may be required to undertake partial or full training to achieve the qualification.

Please note: Xpqualify has no authority to influence or intervene in any assessment outcome or decision made by our affiliated RTOs or their assessors. All decisions regarding eligibility and certification are made solely at the discretion of the RTO.
